How are my pet rats doing?
I realised it’s been a while since I updated you all on Maple and Olive!
Let’s start with my granny, Olive. She’s doing AMAZING, I’m so happy to say! She’s bonded perfectly with the little girls and is going strong. I’ve seen her being groomed by Maple, and it made my heart melt seeing her little eyes squint with happiness because she hasn’t been groomed by another rat since Janurary when Oreo passed away. She’s enjoying a variety of foods with Maple and Pingu (porridge and bananas for breakfast, seeds for snack time, pellets, kumara and broccoli for dinner are a reaccuring theme) and loves foraging in her dig box again with them. She’s way more snuggly and bright, and always comes to see me. She’s got way more stimulation now and has friends to playfight and wrestle with, and build nests for. Before we got the little girls she just slept alone in her swinging basket, but now she can build nests from paper, toilet paper, fabrics she takes from other beds ect. and they all snuggle up together for nap time. She loves playing in my room during free range time and jumping from beds to stools to tables to bookshelfs, and I’m really happy the excitment has returned to her life.
Maple is doing INCREDIBLE and I’m so proud of the progress my little ginger girl has made! Once I was sitting on the couch with her in my jersey, and for a while I noticed she wasn’t moving, so when I checked she was okay she was sleeping! NONE of my ratties have ever done that before, and I wanted the moment to last forever! She’s confident and curious, but also skittish and sensible if she’s frightened, and now I can stroke her and cuddle her without her wriggling away with terror! She’s always there for food time and hugs, and is always the first rat out of the nest to come see me. She loves climbing things, and to stop her from climbing me and getting tangled in my hair (my ratties LOVE rummaging around in my hair and making a birds’ nest XD) I put a wooden stool out for her to climb and jump on. I’m so happy she trusts me and if she’s scared in my room she comes running to me, especially when I call her name. I call her in a high-pitched voice so it sounds like “meepole!” and she most of the time she comes.
Pingu is doing awesome too, and they’re all enjoying lots of new things each day and something I think they love best is when I clean their cage and they hop around while I do it, playing with the sponge and climbing up my arm while I wipe the cage bars.
Here are some photos of Maple and Olive, and Pingu’s nose!
β¦and today they enjoyed a bread bag previously containing a Volare sausage roll!!!
